LAWRENCE, Kan. –
Shelbee Jones twirled a complete game three-hitter to lower her ERA for the season to a Big 12-best 1.12 and the University of Utah softball team captured a 2-1 nail-biter over the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan.
Utah's record through 31 games is now 24-7 and they are 4-1 in the Big 12.
"Shelbee had all of her pitches working for her today," said coach
Amy Hogue. "She mixed well and we played clean behind her. One solo shot should never be able to beat us. I'm very, very proud of her performance in the circle and the work her team did behind her."
For the second straight day, Utah dented home plate in the first inning, this time using two singles sandwiched around a walk, followed by a wild pitch that sent
Danika Wilson across with the day's opening tally. Jones made that lead stand up over the first three frames, but an Anna Soles home run brought the home team level in the fourth.
In the sixth, the Utes scratched out one more run to earn a fragile advantage.
Kennedy Proctor walked and moved to third on a Wilson single, then touched home when
Shonty Passi bounced into a fielder's choice.
With the lead entrusted to her again, Jones bore down and stifled any Jayhawk comeback hopes. She retired the top of the Kansas lineup in order in the sixth, then, after two runners reached with two outs in the seventh, got up 0-2 against eighth-place hitter Ava Wallace and dropped in a perfectly placed changeup for her seventh strikeout of the day.
This performance represented Jones' fifth complete game of the year and she allowed only three hits while retiring the side in order in three different innings.
