Utah runs up highest run total since 2012 in 18-0 victory
The Utes have now won eight in a row and stand at 18-5 in 2026.
"What a fun home opener for us to have," said coach Amy Hogue. "The bats got hot and never stopped today! And the shutout streak continues, which is fun for our pitching staff, which has been stellar, and our defense. I'm looking forward to playing Big 12 competition. It's time to see how we compare to our conference foes."
The power display started with Utah's first batter of the day, when Mia Gomez hit a laser over the right field fence and the Utes added three more runs in the inning on a two-run single from Payton Crank and an RBI safety courtesy of Emily Capobianco.In the second, Kayla Lyon pushed across a run with an RBI single, Shonty Passi doubled in another and Crank ripped another two-bagger into left-center that plated a pair for an 8-0 lead.
Utah's third-inning rally began with a walk, a single, a hit batter and another walk to force in a run. That brought up Lyon, who pulverized the first pitch she saw over the center field fence for a grand slam. Three more Utah dingers came in the fourth, the first from Cian Noli for her first collegiate four-bagger, followed three batters later by a Kennedy Proctor round-tripper, then Izzy Cruz piled on with the first homer of her college career, a two RBI tater to finish off the scoring.
Utah's five home runs represent the program's highest total in a single game since they also hit five on March 7, 2020 and their run total was the most since an 18-run outburst on March 4, 2012 against North Dakota.
In the circle for the home team, Shelbee Jones was no less impressive, permitting only two hits and striking out five to earn her second complete game shutout of the season. The Utes have now blanked five consecutive opponents for the first time since 2017.

Big 12 play begins on Friday for the Utes, who will be in Tempe, Ariz., where they'll start a three-game series with Arizona State at 6 p.m.
