TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Utah softball team erased an early deficit, then exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning before holding on to take their Big 12 Conference opener from the No. 21/No. 22 Arizona State Sun Devils, 9-5, on Friday evening at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
With this triumph, the Utes have now won nine straight and are 1-0 in Big 12 play to go with an overall mark of 19-5.
"One down and 23 to go," said coach
Amy Hogue. "Conference season is upon us and there is nothing like starting with a W on the road. I am so happy for Raci [Miranda] to come home and earn this start and get this win. She's worked hard for this moment and the team found a way to get some runs for her.
"Our defense played well behind Raci today. Our hitters put pressure on them and our defense ended up having the better night."
While the Sun Devils were the first ones on the board, scoring twice in the second, Utah starting pitcher
Raci Miranda spent the next five frames holding the home side in check. Over that span, she allowed just two hits and retired 10 in a row at one point, which allowed the Utah offense to mount a comeback.
An immediate answer came in the third, when
Kennedy Proctor drilled her sixth homer of the season, a solo shot to center that cut the deficit in half. Two stanzas later,
Danika Wilson reached on an infield hit, then raced all the way around from first with the run that knotted the score at 2-2.
That tie remained intact into extras, which is when the Utah offense sprung to life again. An error and two walks loaded the bases for
Hailee White, who dunked a single into left to plate the go-ahead run. Two batters later, another ASU miscue pushed across two more and a bases-loaded walk to Wilson made the score 6-2. The Sun Devils' third error of the inning resulted in another Utah run and RBI singles off the bats of
Payton Crank and
Emily Capobianco put the finishing touches on the inning.
The home team would not go quietly, however. ASU scored three times in their half of the frame and moved the tying run into the on-deck circle with two outs, but
Hailey Maestretti got Ashleigh Mejia to ground out to first to end the evening.
