The First Pitch: Things to Know
- Utah continues Big 12 Conference play tangling with Arizona State in a three-game series from Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
- ASU had the upper hand in last year's meeting of these clubs in Salt Lake City, but the Utes took two of three in 2024-the last time Utah made the trip south. It was highlighted by a Maddux performance in the series opener from left-handed pitcher Bryson Van Sickle, plus two home runs from Matt Flaharty in the rubber game victory. It was Utah's first series win over the Sun Devils since 2017.
- Utah is coming off a tough three-game road swing at Kansas, despite scoring 30 total runs across the weekend and showcasing the firepower of its lineup.
- Jet Gilliam put together a stellar individual performance in last Thursday's opener at KU, going a perfect 5-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored. The junior sparked Utah's offense all night as part of a 16-hit attack in a back-and-forth battle.
- Luke Jacobs was a constant catalyst at the top of the order throughout the series, highlighted by a four-hit performance in game one that included a home run and two doubles. He finished just a triple shy of the cycle and set the tone offensively in tandem with Gilliam. The pair were responsible for driving in a combined 11 runs during the Kansas series.
- Just two weekends ago, Utah had a Big 12 series for the ages with a series win over Kansas State at America First Ballpark. Though K-State came away with the series opener, the Utes grinded out a pair of victories on Saturday and Sunday, capped off both days by eighth inning comebacks. Over the two wins, Utah combined for 11 eighth inning runs.
- Left fielder Jake Long also hit for the cycle in the rubber game of that series, becoming the third Utah player in recorded history to accomplish the feat and first since 2005. Long went 5-for-6 on Sunday, clubbing two homers and finishing with four RBIs and three runs scored.
- Cameron Gurney has been exceptional in his redshirt junior season, hitting .386 (seventh in Big 12) and stringing together a .493 OBP (10th in Big 12). The first baseman has also hit safely in 20 of the past 22 games.
- Right fielder Luke Jacobs is also among the Big 12 leaders with 11 doubles, placing seventh in the league.
- Third baseman Daniel Arambula has also been a key contributor. The sophomore transfer is hitting .312 at the plate, with his 39 hits standing as third-most on the ballclub.
