ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Utah bounced back from its worst loss in seven years and remained in the WAC title chase with a 31-24 win over New Mexico. The Utes never trailed in this one while moving their record to 8-2 (6-1 WAC). Quarterback Mike Fouts and running back Juan Johnson shouldered the offensive load. Fouts completed 17 of 25 passes for 240 yards and two scores, and rushed for another TD. Johnson ran for 111 yards and a touchdown, and picked up a critical first down in the waning minutes of the game to preserve Utah's lead.
Defensively, Utah kept New Mexico's option game in check, holding the nation's eighth-ranked rushing team to 218 ground yards--40 below its average. Harold Lusk picked off his sixth interception of the season and returned it 33 yards as time expired. Daniel Pulsipher tied the school career field goal record with a 34-yard boot--the 34th of his career.
