STANFORD, Calif. - Junior running back Juan Johnson slashed to a season-high 114 yards and sophomore running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala added 64 yards and a touchdown to lead Utah to its first victory of the season. Utah's 17-10 win over Stanford also featured three quarters of shutout ball pitched by the U. defense.
Utah scored on its very first drive, when quarterback Mike Fouts directed an 80-yard, 11-play drive that ended with Fuamatu-Ma'afala's first score of the year. The powerhouse runner dragged several Stanford players into the end zone on his 3-yard run. Utah struck again in the second quarter, when Fouts hit junior college transfer C.J. Johnson with a 28-yard scoring strike. The Utes threatened several other times, but their only other points came on a 23-yard field goal by Daniel Pulsipher late in the third quarter.
Until the final six minutes, Utah had this game firmly in control. The Utes held the ball for nearly 40 minutes and accumulated 406 total yards to Stanford's 325. Utah held the Cardinal to three conversions in 10 third-down attempts. Jeff Kaufusi had two sacks for 10 yards, Robert Love chipped in nine tackles and Jason Hooks picked off an interception to lead the defense.
