The mission of Athletic Learning Support Services (LSS) and all Learning Specialists (LS) is to provide educational support for student-athletes through individualized academic plans designed to promote independent learning for academic success at the University of Utah. The program is designed to provide structured intervention to identified student-athletes in their current classes and to provide instruction and remediation in areas of academic skill and strategy development. Learning Specialists are assigned to individual student-athletes to assist with the transition to campus while conducting one-on-one academic meetings to teach and develop the skills necessary to achieve academic success. Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, time management, note-taking, organization, test-taking skills and preparation, reading comprehension, writing skills, and learning strategies.Â
Learning Specialists also work closely with the Athletics Psychology & Wellness team who runs point (with the Campus Center for Disability & Access - CDA) conducting preliminary educational assessments and evaluations for identified student-athletes. In addition, the Psychology & Wellness team works with CDA to coordinate neuropsychological/psycho-educational testing, while also managing student-athlete accommodations. Learning Specialists work closely with the Psychology & Wellness team in order to provide to student-athletes access to assistive technology, campus and community resources, and effective strategies to facilitate academic success. Student-athletes will also be exposed to both time based and objective based study hall, academic mentoring, tutors, and wide variety of academic success workshops focusing on strategy instruction, academic achievement assessment, individual and group instruction, and independent study time.
