SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Utah women's soccer team won their first ever conference tournament game trampling New Mexico 4-2 today. Utah only out shot the Lobos 16-12, but delivered 11 shots-on-goal while keeping UNM to only five. The victory brings Utah to a 13-6 season record.
Ute forwards Staci Burt and Shauna Gurr proved a dynamic duo as the two paired up on two of the game's goals. Gurr also put in one unassisted shot of her own, reaffirming Head Coach Amy Winslow's preseason quote, "she has a rocket of a foot."
Also scoring for the Utes was midfielder Katie Tate, who started off Utah's scoring spree in the first three minutes of the game. The freshman collected a cross from Burt and strode in for a breakaway shot.
Burt served an integral part of Utah's victory as she made three assists and broke the record for assists in a game. "Staci is the most unselfish player I've coached," Winslow said. "Staci is a leader and she came out and set us up to win today."
The MWC agreed with Winslow's opinion naming Burt to the MWC all-conference first team. Burt leads the Utes with seven assists and 29 points (the senior also has six goals). Also receiving first team honors are midfielder Amy Kofoed and goalkeeper Courtney Hills. Kofoed leads the team and conference with 13 goals. She also has one assist and 27 points. Hills leads the conference with seven shutouts. She has played 1,676 minutes, allowed only 19 goals for a goals-against average of 1.02 and has made 104 saves.
Also making the all-conference list is freshman defender Lesa Zollinger who was named to the MWC second team. The freshman jumped onto the starting lineup midway through the season and has proven herself a valuable asset to the Ute defensive line. She incorporated an aggressive playing style to make two team saves this season.
Adding to Utah's conference experience, Coach Winslow was named the 1999 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. This season, Winslow led the Utes to their best season in history with 13-6 record, an MWC Co-Championship and a spot in the conference semifinals.
The Utes hope to continue to add to their string of victories as they face Brigham Young in the semifinal match tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. The winner of the Utah-BYU contest will then move onto the championship game, Sat., Nov. 6 at 12:00 p.m., where they play the victor in the San Diego State-Air Force game.
