SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Jeremy Killion scored 15 points and Phil Cullen added 12 as Utah beat NAIA member Sioux Falls 72-48 for its 40th straight victory at home, the nation's second longest homecourt winning streak.
Tony Harvey and Alex Jensen each scored 11 points and Jeff Johnsen had 10 for the Utes (6-2), who had been tied with Duke for the second-longest home winning streak at 39 games.
Murray State has the longest active homecourt streak, with 46 games.
Killion hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points during an 18-9 run in the first six minutes of the second half as Utah extended a 38-25 halftime lead to finish the Cougars (4-7).
Sioux Falls played scrappy to stay close through the first 20 minutes, trailing 28-25 with 3:13 before halftime after Nate Deal capped a 6-0 spurt with a fastbreak layup. But Utah answered by scoring the last 10 points of the half.
Deal led Sioux Falls with 14 points while Brad Kennett had 11 but the Cougars hurt their chances with 27 turnovers.
Utah's lead stayed in double digits throughout the second half as the Utes, playing an overmatched opponent on the last day of finals, won their fourth straight before a crowd reported as 12,133.
It seemed more like 5,000 as many Utah fans apparently chose to travel to the Las Vegas Bowl, which pits the football Utes against Fresno State on Saturday. Anyone who stayed away from the basketball game didn't miss much.
Utah had a frightening moment when 6-foot-11 center Nate Althoff went down with 7:02 remaining in the first half, gripping his left leg and screaming.
Althoff was diagnosed with an ankle sprain that will keep him out of action for 10 to 14 days.
Utah's homecourt winning streak started with an 84-63 defeat of Colorado State on Jan. 4, 1997. The Utes haven't lost at home since Tim Duncan's Wake Forest squad won in Salt Lake City on Dec. 31, 1996.
