LAHAINA, Hawaii - Andre Miller scored five of his 24 points during a 14-1 second-half run and Alex Jensen added seven during the same stretch as No. 18 Utah beat Arizona State 65-48 Monday night in the first round of the Maui Invitational.
The win put Utah up against No. 17 Indiana in one of the semifinal games. The Hoosiers rallied from a double-digit second half deficit to beat Kansas State 71-70.
In the first semifinal, No. 19 Syracuse, an 82-44 winner over Chaminade, plays Michigan, which upset No. 22 Clemson, 59-56.
The Utes (2-1) seemed en route to an easy victory in the first half, moving out to a 23-9 lead, aided by a 19-4 spurt. However, the Aztecs (1-2) closed the half with four 3-pointers, two by Ron Dubois, to narrow Utah's lead to 28-25 at the midway mark.
ASU stayed within striking distance early in the second half, never falling behind by more than three points. But, with 12:12 left, Jensen knocked in his seven points and Miller added his contribution to start the rout.
For the night, Miller made all seven of his shots, including a 3-for-3 performance from behind the 3-point line.
The margin was up to 20 when Nate Althoff made a free throw with 2:59 left.
It was a game of opposites in the second half as Utah went 13-of-19 (68 percent) from the floor while the Aztecs shot a dismal 19 percent on 4-of-21. For the game, ASU went 13-of-52 (25 percent).
Utah had a 36-27 rebounding advantage.
In addition to his scoring, Miller had five assists and five rebounds. Offensively, he was helped by Hanno Mattola, who had 13 points, and Jensen, who finished with 11.
Jason Patton and Eddie House each had 12 points for Arizona State. However, the team's leading scorer, Bobby Lazor, scored only nine points, going 1-for-11 from the floor.
