The Ute volleyball team pushed its Western Athletic Conference record above break-even for the first time this season with a 15-12, 15-10, 15-5 Pacific Division win over UTEP on Saturday night at Crimson Court.
The Utes, now 4-3 in conference play and 14-6 overall, were led for the second-time in as many nights by Kalani Tonga, who had a match-high 18 kills. Tonga also had a .433 hitting percentage and a match-high 13 digs. Stacie Greenwalt had 13 kills, a .455 hitting percentage and five blocks. Sara Shakula had 10 kills, nine digs and four blocks. Graciela Torres equaled Tonga's high mark of 13 digs and also had a match-high 49 assists.
Eryn Polhamus led UTEP (10-8, 2-5 WAC) with 11 kills, a .364 hitting percentage, six digs and five blocks. The Utes outhit the Miners .227 to .128 and had an 11 to 7 edge in blocks.
"We've had a lot of people step up for us in the last couple of weeks, but I think we're at our best when our big three of Stacie, Kalani and Sara lead us is kills," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere. "All three of them had great matches tonight, and Stacie really needed a breakout match. Graciela also set a great match and got Kalani a lot of one-on-ones."
The Miners played the Utes tough early in both the first and second games. UTEP led 10-9 in the first frame and drew back within 13-12 after Utah had taken the lead. Brooke Barton put away one of her eight kills with a tenacious effort to give the Utes the 15-12 win in game one.
UTEP jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second game before the Utes stormed back again.
Shakula had a kill to put Utah ahead for good at 10-9. Utah's next match with be at Brigham Young on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
