The University of Utah track and field team has a busy week in front of them. Most of the men's team and the entire women's team will compete on Wednesday in the Idaho State Mid-Week Invite, a one day event in Pocatello, Idaho. Eight athletes will then travel to Stanford University to compete in the Cardinal Invitational on Friday, May 7th.
Jeff Simonich, Travis Hildebrand, and Chris Merkely will compete in the 5,000 meter event and Larry Stanley will compete in the steeple chase at Stanford. They will not compete in Idaho. The four women competing at Stanford are: Amy Tidwell in the longjump, Stacey Rhineer in the triple jump, Chantel Goldsberry in the hammer throw, and Elisha Kekacs in the 400 meter hurdles. They will also compete in Idaho. Head Coach Mike Jones hopes the athletes competing at Stanford can qualify for the NCAA outdoor championships, but the extra competition will also help prepare them for the WAC championship.
"It will always benefit an athlete to get as much competition experience as they can," he says. "But I am also trying to prepare them for the conference championship in two weeks in Fort Collins, Colo." Utah may decide not travel to Idaho if the weather becomes a factor. "If it is too cold and wet in Pocatello we will cancel. It is not worth risking injury. If we can't benefit from a meet then we're not going to do it," says Jones.
Jones took Simonich and Tidwell to the Oregon Invitational over the weekend in Eugene, Oregon. Simonich placed third in the 1,500 meter event with a time of 3:46.34. This ranks him second on Utah's all-time performance list. Tidwell placed first in the long jump (19'3.25"). Utah's next scheduled meet is the Utah Classic May 12th in Logan , Utah.
