SAN DIEGO - The men's tennis team snapped a six-match losing streak with a 5-2 thumping of Iowa in San Diego, Calif. on Mar. 18. This was a needed win for the Utes as they improved their 1-7 record, and allowed them to salvage a victory from the current five match road trip.
Utah started the day of strong, winning all three doubles matches. Ben Coates and Philippe Rodrigue, currently ranked 17th in the nation, picked up a 8-4 victory over Ulf Jenter and Curtis Dunn at the No. 1 position. At No. 2, Trevor Ferguson an Kevin Zenger picked up their first doubles win as a tandem defeating Tom Buetikofer and Ben Bamsey, 6-1, 6-0. Ashley Dyer and Nik Yip completed the doubles sweep for Utah at No. 3 topping J.R. Chidley and Birts Auskaps, 8-3.
In singles matches, Utah won four of the day's six matches. Coates topped Buetikofer, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Iowa picked up its first win of the day at No. 2 as Chidley topped Rodrigue, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Two more Ute wins included Dyer downing Jentler, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, while Eke defeated Mandis at No. 4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Iowa's Jake Krenbiel outlasted Ferguson to capture Iowa's second point, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-7. Ryan Snow finished off the victorious day for the Utes at No. 6, waxing Bamsey 6-1, 6-0.
Utah is looking forward to coming home for three home matches against WAC competition before ending the regular season at BYU on Apr. 13.
