SALT LAKE CITY –The University of Utah men's tennis team fell to No. 15 Baylor 4-2 in the first match of their Big 12 homestand. The Utes are now 13-7 overall while posting a 2-2 record in conference play.Â
DOUBLES Reid Jarvis and Dante Teramo battled at the No. 1 spot but fell short in a tight 5-7 match to Baylor's Marko Miladinovic and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen. Securing a crucial win at the No. 3 spot, Emmett Potter and Nicolas Calixto defeated Louis Bowden and Zsombor Velcz 7-5, pushing the doubles to the deciding point on court No. 2. Max Relic and Dylan Applegate went back and forth with Baylor's Devin Badenhorst and Luc Koenig, taking them to tiebreak where they eventually clinched the doubles point for the Utes with a 7-6 (2) win in the No. 2 spot.Â
SINGLES Utah's singles took a slow start despite the energy from the doubles win. Baylor picked up wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the line up to take a 3-1 edge over the Utes.Â
With Baylor only one point away from clinching the match, Relic forced a third set tiebreak to secure Utah's first singles match with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (3) victory over Alexandru Chirita in the No. 4 spot. Calixto forced three sets before falling short to Miladinovic 6-3, 5-7, 2-6 in the No. 6 spot to end the match.Â
Charles Frey won his first set 6-4 but dropped his second set and was in his third set at the No. 5 spot before play was halted.Â
UP NEXT The Utes will host TCU on Saturday, March 29, at 3 p.m. in the George S. Eccles Center to finish their Big 12 homestand before heading to Tucson to take on Arizona on April 3.Â
