ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Hanno Mottola scored 16 points and No. 20 Utah celebrated its return to the Top 25 with a 57-39 win over No. 17 New Mexico, handing the Lobos their first loss this season in The Pit.
Utah, which earlier in the day ended its seven-week absence from the national rankings, outscored New Mexico 17-1 over a seven-minute stretch early in the first half en route to its 12th straight win.
The Utes (17-4, 7-0 Western Athletic Conference) used stifling defensive pressure to force New Mexico (17-5, 4-3) into 10 first half turnovers and an assortment of poor shots.
The 39 points were the fewest by New Mexico on its homecourt since a 61-37 loss to San Diego State on Feb. 3, 1984.
Still, New Mexico had a chance in the second half. The Lobos, who had won 16 games at home this season, used a 9-3 run to get within 43-35 with 12:22 left.
But the Lobos promptly self-destructed with turnovers and forced shots. They went scoreless for more than seven minutes and by then Utah was back in control at 50-35 with 6:40 left.
Long scored 17 points for New Mexico, which shot a season-low 31 percent.
