HONOLULU, Hawaii - The No. 9 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (21-2, 11-1 WAC) continued their assault on the Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division with a victory over the Utah Utes (14-8, 4-5 WAC), Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
A crowd of 6,504 pushed the Wahine's attendance over 100,000 for the fourth consecutive year. Hawai'i is the only school in NCAA history to reach that mark in a season.
The 15-8, 8-15, 15-3, 15-9 victory was hard-earned as the Wahine fought through the fatigue brought on by last night's emotion-draining victory over No. 4 Brigham Young.
The Wahine blasted 68 kills for the match with four players hitting for double digits. UH was led by All-America candidate Heather Bown who pounded down a match-leading 20 kills while hitting a robust .500. The junior middle hitter was supported by junior left-side hitter Heidi Ilustre who recorded a double-double for the second straight night. Ilustre ripped 12 kills on offense and added 11 digs on defense. Last week's WAC Pacific Division player-of-the-week Jessica Sudduth and freshman right-side hitter Veronica Lima added 11 kills apiece.
UH started strong in the first game surging to a commanding 10-4 lead and cruising to the opening set victory. Utah answered back in the second game, knocking down 19 kills and a dozen digs in scoring the 15-8 match-tying victory.
After intermission, the Wahine returned to the court with rejuvenated spirit and tore through the Utes, hitting .400 for the game and putting up four team blocks in the 15-minute, 15-3 mauling.
The final game was the Bown-Sudduth show as they smashed seven and five kills respectively. Bown also added four of her team-leading eight blocks. The team hit a combined 22 kills at .294 for the stanza.
The Wahine had 18 team blocks for the match. UH also had 58 assists for the match with senior setter Nikki Hubbert dishing out 56.
