PULLMAN, Wash. - The Utah volleyball team came back from an 0-2 deficit only to fall to No. 22 Washington State in five games on Friday night at Beasley Coliseum in the opener of the Les Schwab Cougar Challenge.
The Cougars took the first two games 15-12 and 15-13 before the Utes roared back to take the next two games in convincing fashion 15-8 and 15-10. Wazzu won the decisive fifth game 15-9.
Sophomore Kalani Tonga led Utah (1-1) with 24 kills, a .208 hitting percentage, 18 digs, and three service aces. Sara Shakula had 13 kills, 10 digs and six blocks. McKelle Stilson had 12 kills and five blocks. Stacie Greenwalt posted seven blocks and 11 kills. Graciela Torres set a fine match with 50 assists and 17 digs.
Jennifer Stinson led Washington State (1-0) with a .350 hitting percentage and eight blocks. The Cougars outhit the Utes .222 to .185.
"I thought it was a good effort, and I was happy that we came back from being down 0-2," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere. "We're due to beat a Top 25 team sometime soon, but tonight just wasn't it."
The tournament continues on Saturday, with Utah facing Louisville and Gonzaga.
