SALT LAKE CITY - Tara McNeil, a member of the Utah women's soccer team was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association Scholar Athlete all-region second team. McNeil served as a midfielder/forward on the Ute squad from 1995-98.
The Salt Lake City native was named to the Western Athletic Conference academic all-WAC teams all four years of her college career, was a WAC Scholar Athlete in 1997 and 98 and earned the team's highest grade point average in 1997 and 98. McNeil will graduate this May with a 3.81 GPA in parks, recreation and tourism.
Ute goalkeeper Tawni Martineau was named to the 1999 NACAA scholar athlete all-region third team. The senior was Utah's first-string goalkeeper for four seasons. She was named to the academic all-WAC from 1995-98 and was a WAC Scholar Athlete in 1997 and 98.
Martineau earned the team award for academic excellence (highest GPA) in 1996. She will be graduating this spring with a 3.47 GPA in business marketing.
Utah received a team academic award from the NSCAA for maintaining a team GPA over 3.0. The team tied for 24th in out of 43 teams honored in Division I soccer.
Six other soccer players were named to the 1999 WAC academic all-conference team. Mondis Ariazand (human development and family studies, 3.76), Dominique Barcellona (sociology, 3.3), Melanie Hewitt (parks, recreation and tourism, 3.58), Tonya Dansereau (physical therapy), Jamie Young (accounting, 3.82), and Lorrie Tipton (civil engineering, 3.34). In the fall of 1998, 19 of Utah's 25 players were named to the Honor Roll.
