Utah holds an opponent without a shot on goal for first time since 2022
TUCSON, Ariz. - Bella Woods tallied her second consecutive game-winner and the University of Utah women's soccer team held the Arizona Wildcats without a shot on goal as the Utes claimed a 1-0 victory on Friday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Murphy Field at Mulcahy Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
This triumph boosts Utah's record to 7-5-3 and they are now 2-2-2 in league play.
"I'm really proud of our team's effort for the full 90 minutes tonight," said coach Hideki Nakada. "Grace and Kelly combined beautifully to set up a fantastic goal by Bella to get us on the board early. I thought we were a bit unfortunate not to add another in the first half. Our back line and Erin were excellent once again, earning another well-deserved shutout. We're looking forward to coming home for a big matchup against a very good Colorado team next Thursday."

The Utes immediately went on the attack and their initiative paid off quickly in the second minute. A run down the left side of the attacking zone by Brooklyn Blaylock and a cross from Grace Watkins led to a perfect feed from Kelly Bullock at the top of the box to Woods, who blasted the ball into the left side of the goal for a 1-0 edge.
This was the fastest Utah goal since they got on the board in the first minute against Utah State in 2017 and the second time Utah scored in the second minute of a match in 2025. They also scored less than two minutes in against Oregon State on Sept. 14.
The Utes made sure that lead stood up into halftime. The Wildcats finished the period with more shots than their guests, but none of those attempts were on-target.
The second half started with Utah attempting to add to its lead, but a pair of well-struck shots from Bullock and Watkins in the opening minutes were turned away by Arizona's Olivia Ramey. In the 62nd minute, a perfectly placed throw-in sent Abby Affleck in on goal, but her effort went just wide.
Meanwhile, on their back line, the Utes continued to hold fast. The home team managed to earn three corners in the final period, but Utah's defenders were in position to clear each one from the box. The Wildcats didn't register their first shot of the half until the 77th minute and it only resulted in a goal kick for keeper Erin Gibbs.
The last best chance Arizona had to tie the score came on their fourth corner of the evening in the 83rd minute, with the ball arriving at the edge of the six-yard box. Fortunately for the visitors, Bullock and Ryann Cull were in position to remove the ball from the scoring area. When final horn sounded, Gibbs and the Utes had their fifth clean sheet of the year.
This was the first time since Oct. 6, 2022 Utah held the opposition without a shot on goal and, following their 1-0 win at Houston on Sunday, the Utes have now scored consecutive road shutout victories in conference play for the first time since 2015.
