SAN JOSE, Calif. - Freshman middle blocker McKelle Stilson hit .813 to break the Western Athletic Conference hitting percentage record as the Utes swept San Jose State 15-10, 15-10, 15-5, Saturday evening at SJSU's Event Center.
Stilson, who had a match-high 13 kills and no errors in 16 attempts, broke the former record of .810 set by Laurel Luman of New Mexico in 1993. She also led the Utes with seven blocks.
Kalani Tonga and Brooke Barton each had 10 kills for the Utes. Tonga hit .333 with a team-best nine digs and two blocks. Barton hit .348 for the match with eight digs and two blocks. Graciela Torres posted a match-high 44 assists.
Joslynn Gallop had 12 kills to lead San Jose State. The Utes (12-6, 2-3 WAC) out hit the Spartans (14-5, 3-2 WAC) .358 to .117, and had a 12 to three edge in blocking.
"It was a really good match for us, and I was pleased with way we came back after the loss in a grueling match to Fresno State," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere. "San Jose State had already beat Fresno State at home, so for us to come in here and get a win really helps us in the division race."
Utah hosts New Mexico and UTEP next weekend at Crimson Court.
