SALT LAKE CITY - Seniors Sara Shakula and Erin Petersen stepped up big in their final home match to lead Utah to a four-game win over Fresno State in Western Athletic Conference volleyball on Saturday night at Crimson Court.
Utah, with its 15-12, 15-6, 4-15, 15-12 win over Fresno State and San Jose State's loss to BYU, took over sole possession of third place in the WAC's Pacific Division. The Utes improved to 17-8 overall and 7-5 in conference play. The Bulldogs fell to 17-8 and 6-6.
Shakula's 14 kills and Petersen's 12 kills on Senior Night led five Utes in double figures in kills. Petersen also had a .409 hitting percentage and a match-high eight blocks. McKelle Stilson posted 15 kills. Kalani Tonga had 14 kills and 16 digs. Brooke Barton had 10 kills and 10 digs. Graciela Torres posted 58 assists and 18 digs.
Shanus Bennett had a match-high 24 kills and 21 kills to lead Fresno State. Utah out hit Fresno State .201 to .170 and had an 11 to nine edge in blocking.
"We've been working on adding different sets to our offense because I thought we were getting a little stagnant offensively," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere. "It was nice to see that kind of balance in our offense. Fresno State is a great team, and that was a fun match to play. Now we have to go on the road and win two matches. We are very close to making our goals for this season."
Utah closes out the regular season at UTEP and New Mexico next weekend.
