ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Utah downed New Mexico in five games on Saturday night at University Arena to finish all alone in third place in the Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division.
Utah won 3-15, 15-3, 11-15, 15-5, 15-8 to finish 19-8 overall and 9-4 in WAC play. Kalani Tonga posted 17 kills and hit .309. Sara Shakula had 15 kills and hit .323. Erin Petersen, who was particularly big for the Utes in games four and five, had 10 kills and hit .400 for the match. Brooke Barton and Lucie Turkova had 17 and 15 digs, respectively. Graciela Torres recorded 41 assists.
"I knew that match was going to be a battle," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere. "We were a little flat to start out, and New Mexico was really fired up since they were playing at home on their Senior Night. They had also gotten much better the second half of the WAC season. But, we fought hard and got the win, and that's what matters."
Utah is the Pacific Division's No. 3 seed in the WAC Tournament, which takes place Tuesday through Saturday in Las Vegas. The Utes open up against TCU, the Mountain Division's No. 6 seed, on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. (PST).
