EL PASO, Texas - Kalani Tonga posted 15 kills and Sara Shakula had 12 to lead Utah to a three-game sweep of UTEP on Friday night at Memorial Gym in Western Athletic Conference volleyball.
Utah won 15-3, 17-15, 15-1, outhitting the Miners .375 to .117. The Utes, who improved to 18-8 overall and 8-5 in WAC play, also had an 11 to eight edge in blocking. UTEP fell to 10-14 overall and 2-11 in the conference with the loss. Shakula, who also had a match-high 11 digs and four blocks, hit .674 with only one error in 17 attempts. McKelle Stilson contributed a match-high five blocks and 10 kills. Erin Petersen had 7 kills with a .455 hitting percentage and three blocks. Jen Snow hit .455 for six kills. Lucie Turkova had a match-high 11 digs. Graciela Torres had 46 assists and eight digs.
Utah can lock down sole possession of third place in the WAC Pacific Division with a win in the regular-season finale at New Mexico on Saturday night.
