SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah used a balanced attack with five players recording 16 kills or more as the Utes defeated the Idaho State Bengals 15-9, 15-6, 13-15, 15-7 on Tuesday night at Crimson Court in the season opener for both teams.
The Utes' offensive explosion was one of record proportions, breaking the school four-game match record with 92 kills. The old mark was 82 set on two occasions.
Junior middle blocker Stacie Greenwalt led the Ute attack with 18 kills, a .355 hitting percentage and five blocks. Sophomore Kalani Tonga also had 18 kills, a .279 hitting percentage and 10 digs. Sara Shakula, Jen Snow and McKelle Stilson each had 16 kills. Stilson also added six blocks. Graciela Torres booked 67 assists.
"I wasn't worried about our offense going into the season, and I think you could see why tonight," said a pleased Ute head coach Beth Launiere after the match. "Stacie (Greenwalt) was solid in the middle. Kalani (Tonga) is going through a transition with the move to outside hitter, but his was a solid match for her. I think it was also an eye-opening experience."
Utah (1-0) breezed through the first two games, and appeared to be on its way to a sweep with a 13-8 lead in the third game. However, the Bengals scored seven unanswered points to push the match to a fourth game. Penny Sneddon paced Idaho State (0-1) with 12 kills and a .226 hitting percentage. Utah had 92 kills to ISU's 47, and had a .244 to .146 edge in hitting efficiency.
Utah plays in a tournament at Washington State on Friday and Saturday.
