SALT LAKE CITY -- In their season opener, the Utes defeated University of San Diego by a score of 2-1.

Goals were scored by team co-captains Tara McNeil and Staci Burt. McNeil scored in the first ten minutes of the second half off a direct kick assisted by sophomore Lorrie Tipton. The Torerors tied up the score 1-1 when Alison Benoit shot an unassisted goal from a deflected ball. 1997 team co-scoring leader Burt won the game for the Utes with her goal at the 84:07 mark off another assist by Tipton.

Overall, the Utes took ten shots on goal. Goalkeeper Tawni Martineau takes the win as she protected five shots on goal.

The Utes return home to host Utah State Sat., Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be held at Ute Field. Following the match, the Utes will have a poster signing.
