Utes Make Final Trip - The Utah women's soccer team (10-7, 2-4 WAC) ends its season with games against UTEP and UC-Santa Barbara. The UTEP game is Fri., Oct. 30 at 3:00 p.m. The UC-Santa Barbara game is scheduled for Sat., Oct. 31 at 12:00 p.m. Both games will be played in El Paso, Texas. UTEP is 14-4-0 on the season with a 5-1 WAC record. The Miners are tied for first place in the WAC Mountain Division. The Utes own a 1-0 series record with UTEP. UC-Santa Barbara is 3-13-1 with a 1-7-1 Big West record. This is the Utes' first match with the Gauchos.
WAC Notes - Utah finished its WAC season with a 2-4 record, failing to qualify for the WAC tournament. Utah, San Jose State and Hawai'i are all 2-4, but as SJSU defeated both the Utes and the Rainbow Wahine, the Spartans won the tie breaker for the Pacific Division.
Utes to Watch - All-WAC candidate Staci Burt continues to set records for the Utes. Burt scored two goals in the Utes' 4-0 victory over UNLV. The junior has 12 goals and five assists for 29 points. She leads the team in both scoring and points. Burt has the Utah record for career points with 74. She ranks ** in the WAC in scoring and goals and is ** in assists. Sophomore Lorrie Tipton added two assists last weekend to break the Utah record for career assists with 14 (previously set at 11 by Jacki Doman, 1995-96) .
Tipton leads the 1998 team in assists with eight and is second on the team in overall points with 14, as she also owns three goals. Tipton is one assist shy of tying the Utah record for individual season assists which was set in 1996 by Doman (9).
Tipton is ranked ** in the WAC in assists. Senior Tara McNeil had two assists against UNLV, bringing her season total to 12 points (three goals and six assists). McNeil is ranked third on the team in scoring and second on the team in assists. Freshman Amy Kofoed scored her fifth goal of the season boosting her point total to 12. She also has two assists. Kofoed is ranked second on the team in goals scored and fourth in overall points. She is ** in the WAC.
Ute Notes - The Utah women's soccer team ended its home season with a 4-0 victory over UNLV and a farewell tribute to the senior class. The Utes lose 10 athletes who laid the foundation of the Utah program as freshmen in 1995. To this point in their collegiate careers, the 1998 senior class has forged a 38-32-1 record, including the 4-0 win. The Utes are 10-7-1 on the season with a 2-4 WAC record.
Last Week - Junior Staci Burt claimed her 12th goal of the season as she scored twice for the Utes. At 11:06, sophomore Lorrie Tipton fed Burt a pass for the goal. The score remained 1-0 until 46:51 in the second half when defender Bernie Hogan headed a ball for Burt's second goal. Hogan came back ten minutes later with a goal of her own, which was scored off a pass from Tara McNeil. Freshman Amy Kofoed scored the Utes' last goal of the game from a corner kick by Tipton that was assisted by McNeil. Overall, the Utes out shot the Rebels 29-6, including 14 shots-on-goal. Ute goalkeepers Tawni Martineau and Sarah Englis shared the Utes' fifth shutout of the season.
