The Utah women's soccer team (9-4, 1-1) travels to California to compete against Fresno State and San Jose State. The Utes play Fresno State in Fresno, Thurs., Oct. 15 at 7:00 p.m. The Utah-SJSU game is scheduled for Sat., Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in San Jose, Calif. Fresno State is currently 5-6-3 with a 1-1-1 WAC record. San Jose State is 1-11 (0-3).
Ute Notes
Midfielder Lorrie Tipton had two assists and one goal last weekend, bringing her season total to 10 points (two goals, six assists). Tipton ranks first on the team in assists and is tied for second in points. The sophomore assisted Staci Burt in the Utes' only goal against Brigham Young.
Versus Hawai'i, Tipton scored Utah's first goal and fed Jessica Narajowski a corner kick for the game-winning goal. Goalkeeper Tawni Martineau defended 18 shots on goal to raise her goals against average to 1.360. She made 10 saves and allowed two goals against BYU (8-1 versus Hawai'i). Martineau has played 1,125 minutes, stopped 72 shots on goal and allowed 17 goals. She owns four shutouts (three complete).
Freshman Alli Cerruti scored her fourth goal of the season against Hawai'i. Cerruti ranks second on the team in scoring with 10 points (four goals and two assists). Staci Burt scored one goal and one assist last weekend. The junior leads the team with 10 goals and 25 points (five assists). Burt continues to add to her Utah record in career points, which her weekend exploits brought to 69.
Last Week
The Utah women's soccer team (9-4) is 1-1 in WAC play following a 2-1 loss to Brigham Young and 4-1 victory over Hawai'i. In a physical game resulting in 19 fouls and one yellow card by each team, BYU out shot the Utes 14-11 (12-4 shots-on-goal). Utah took 11 corner kicks to BYU's three. Burt scored the first goal of the match at 9:26 when she headed in a corner kick by Tipton. BYU came back to score at 44:14 when Maren Hendershot tapped the ball past goalkeeper Martineau. Hendershot sealed the BYU victory when she scored another solo shot in the last 10 minutes of the game. Utah dominated the Hawai'i game, out-shooting the Rainbow Wahine 22-9 with 15 shots on goal.
The Utes tallied seven corner kicks. The Utes scored early when Tipton struck a pass from Burt in the first five minutes of play. Jessica Narajowski came in for the Utes' second goal, heading in a corner kick from Tipton. Freshman Amy Kofoed claimed number three when she lured Hawaii's keeper from the box for the goal. Freshman Alli Cerruti struck the Utes' final goal of the game at 50:40 from a pass by Melanie Hewitt. Hawai'i scored its only goal in the 70th minute.
