SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Kalani Tonga had 18 kills and 12 digs, while Stacie Greenwalt posted 13 kills and hit .478 to lead Utah to a four-game win over Wyoming in women's volleyball on Friday night at Crimson Court.
Utah won the first two games 15-11 and 15-10 before losing the third 15-9. The Utes rallied to shutdown the Cowgirls in the fourth game 15-11.
Since Utah (9-3) is in the Pacific Division of the Western Athletic Conference and Wyoming (4-6) is in the Mountain Division, the match between the old rivals did not count as a league match.
Also posting strong numbers for Utah were freshman middle blocker McKelle Stillson with 12 kills and 10 blocks. Sara Shakula has 10 kills and 11 digs. Wyoming was led by 19 kills with a .333 hitting percentage and 12 digs from Jami Laya. The Utes outhit the Cowgirls .231 to .213.
After Wyoming controlled game three, Utah jumped out to an 11-2 lead in game four. The Cowgirls refused to surrender easily, pealing off seven unanswered points to tie at 11-all. Utah then came back to score the next four point to close out its eighth win of the season and improve to 3-0 at home.
"We really served well in the first two games, and that took them out of their system. We didn't serve as well after that, which allowed them to pass better and start running their offense. They're a good team when they can do that as we saw," said Ute head coach Beth Launiere. "Stacie Greenwalt was very impressive," Launiere continued. "She started out slow, but really pulled herself together for a fine match."
Utah, ranked 25th in the nation in attendance entering the week, drew a season-best crowd of 843 for the match.
The U. concludes its non-conference schedule at Utah State next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
