SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah's women's volleyball team opened their season tonight, hosting Northern Iowa. With Northern Iowa coming off a 23-3 season in 1998, Utah knew it would have its hands full tonight. The Utes lost in three, (14-16, 15-17, 10-15). Utah now moves to 0-1 overall, 0-0 in the Mountain West. Northern Iowa improves to 1-0 overall.
For the Utes, sophomore middle blocker McKelle Stilson totaled 16 kills for a .538 hitting percentage and 6 total blocks. Teammate Adrianne Bradley recorded a double-double, posting 13 kills and 17 digs. Senior setter Graciela Torres totaled 47 assists and 11 digs in the match. Utah hit .143 on the night.
Northern Iowa's Alexandra Auker had 15 kills and 14 digs, while teammate Holly VanHofwegen totaled 10 kills and 7 total blocks. The Panthers posted a .151 hitting percentage in the match.
"You saw two pretty evenly matched teams come out on the court, but their experience showed up and our inexperience showed up also. We have so many good things to take from this match, it was a great situation to get into early in the season. It was a tough one for all of our new players, but I thought they handled it well," said Launiere.
Utah travels to Lubbock, Texas, Friday Sept. 3, to participate in the Texas Tech Tournament. The Utes will play SMU, Wright State, North Carolina State, and its host Texas Tech in the two-day tourney.
