SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's soccer team is working on a new record: winning in overtime. For the third time this season the Utes have claimed overtime victories, this time with a 1-0 win over Washington. Utah has played in four overtime games this season also defeating Kansas (2-1), Butler (3-2) and losing to Michigan (2-3). With its recent win over the Huskies, Utah is 6-3.
Utah outshot Washington 20-15, but the Huskies pounded Ute goalkeeper Courtney Hills with 12 shots on goal (Utah, 9). The freshman claimed her second shutout of the season.
Shauna Gurr claimed the victory for the Utes in double sudden death overtime. The freshman gathered a pass from forward Alli Cerruti for a 20 yd shot into the Huskie net.
Also delivering a standout performance for Utah was defender Lesa Zollinger. The sophomore make an amazing team save in the second half when Hills was lured from the box allowing the Huskie offense a direct shot on the Utah goal. Zollinger made a diving save deflecting the ball with her body and keeping the Utes in the game.
"We played really tough and we didn't let down in overtime and continued with the intensity that gave us the win," Head Coach Amy Freeman Winslow said.
