Salt Lake City - COMING UP: Utah hits the road on Tues, Oct. 10, facing in-state rival Utah State at 7:00 p.m. (MST) in Logan, Utah. On Fri., Oct. 13, Utah hosts MWC opponent New Mexico at 7:00 p.m. (MST). Utah will take on Air Force at home on Sat., Oct. 14, at 7:00 p.m. (MST).
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: The No. 15 ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team upset in-state rival in a three game sweep, 15-5, 15-8, 15-7, over No. 13 ranked Brigham Young on Fri., Oct. 6. Utah defeated the Idaho State Bengals in a quick three-game match-up (15-6, 15-10, 15-5) on Tues., Oct. 3 at Crimson Court. The Utes are now 13-2 overall, 4-1 in MWC play.
The University of Utah women's volleyball team continues to stay in the Top 25 USA Today/AVCA poll. The Utes moved up to No. 15 in this week's poll. Utah received 694 votes in the Oct. 9 poll. The Utes earned their first-ever national ranking, coming in 18th in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll released Mon., Sept. 11.
Possible starters for the Utes in the match-up against No. 25 ranked Utah State, New Mexico and Air Force are: McKelle Stilson (Jr., MB), Jen Snow-Richards (Sr., OH), Lucie Turkov? (Sr., S), Katrena Ellett (So., MB), Alisa Geddes (Jr., OH), Brooke Barton (Sr., OH/DS), Kim Turner (Fr., MB) and Adrianne Bradley-Drake (Jr., OH/DS). The Utes return five starters, 12 letterwinners and add three true freshmen to this year's roster. Utah received 31 votes to rank 29th in the 1999 season end USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Poll. Utah's 1999 final RPI ranking, produced by the NCAA, was 22nd.
SCOUTING No. 25 RANKED UTAH STATE: Utah State lost its first two conference matches of the year this past weekend at No. 18 Long Beach State (7-15, 5-15, 8-15) and No. 14 Pacific (11-15, 15-17, 4-15). Versus Long Beach State, senior Melissa Schoepf led the Aggies with 10 kills as USU hit just .137 as a team. LBSU hit a blistering .419 in the match. Against Pacific, the Aggies played a little better than it did against the 49ers but were still swept in three games. Senior Amy Crosbie had a match-high 24 kills and 12 digs in the contest, while Schopef added 18 kills and 10 digs. USU hit .209 overall, while UOP hit .351. USU has now lost 17 matches in a row to both LBSU and UOP.
Utah State has been on a roll as of late, winning 10 of its last 12 matches after starting the season with a 2-3 record. The 10 match winning streak for USU was the longest for an Aggie team since the 1980 team won 15 matches in a row. Utah State has also won 25 of its last 34 matches dating back to last year, which is the best winning streak since 1980.
For the first time ever, Utah State's women's volleyball team is ranked in the Top-25 in the country as the Aggies are 25th in the USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Poll and 20th in the Volleyball Magazine Poll.
Tom Peterson is in his second season as head coach at Utah State, after leading the Aggies to a divisional championship in his first season. Prior to USU, Peterson spent the previous three seasons at Salt Lake Community College, posting a record of 80-38, and 28-6 in the conference. Peterson also spent six years as head coach of the men's program at Penn State University, guiding the Nitnay Lions to a national championship in 1994 and five Final Four appearances. During his 10 plus year tenure as a head coach, he has an overall record of 233-104 (.691).
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO: The Lobos split their weekend series defeating the Wyoming Cowgirls in three- straight,15-11,15-12 and 15-11,and losing to the No.3 ranked Colorado State Rams in three games,15-5,15-5,15-7.The Lobos (7-8 overall) are tied for third place in the conference rankings with BYU and San Diego State with 3-2 records.
Against Wyoming the Lobos started slow but gained momentum after being down 11-7. UNM came back with the help of senior outside hitter Micaela Conley who went on to serve 13 of New Mexico 's 15 points. Conley scored a career high three service aces and scored a team-season high 20 digs.Junior Jessie Goffard struggled offensively hitting only .080 but did score her eighth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 18 digs. Sophomore Erika Sansoni hit .318 to lead the Lobos in hitting.
As a team New Mexico tied their season high in digs with 76. The Lobos hit .181 to Wyoming 's .103. UNM served up seven aces including two by sophomore defensive specialist Blaire Burns.
The Lobos had a tougher time of it against the powerful Colorado State attack. CSU hit for .368 in the match compared to UNM's .070. CSU outblocked the Lobos eight to one with only freshman Amy Amundson scoring a block solo the entire night. Freshman Lynzie Hayes hit .750 for the match. Sophomore Erika Sansoni led the Lobos with eight kills. Junior Jessie Goffard was the lone Lobo in double figure digs with 10.
Head coach Laurel Brassey Iversen,UNM's winningest coach, is in her 17th season at New Mexico with a career record of 287-201 (.588). She is just 12 shy of 500 career matches.
SCOUTING AIR FORCE: Air Force is on a five-match losing streak, being virtually swept by all five MWC opponents they've faced. The Falcons have won one game (against Wyoming) in the last five matches played and are 6-10 overall, 0-5 in MWC play. On Fri., Oct. 5, Air Force lost in three games (15-4, 15-7, 15-2) to No. 3 ranked Colorado State. Wyoming defeated the Falcons, 3-1, 16-14, 10-15, 15-0, 15-8.
Freshman Delavane Diaz leads the Falcons, averaging 4.26 kills per game and 3.22 digs per game. Shaylor Billings is second on the team in kills per game (3.67) and leads the team with a .341 hitting percentage. Ana-Marie Ortega posts 3.21 kills per game and 3.00 digs per game. Freshman setter Kristin Huitt posts 8.20 assists per game and teammate Katie Dildy averages 3.95 assists per game. As a team, the Falcons average 13.64 KPG, 12.23 APG, 1.40 SAPG, 14.64 DPG and 1.70 BPG.
Head coach Penny Lucas-White, is in her 5th season at Air Force, posting a 35-80 overall record with the Falcons and a career record of 113-148.
SERIES SHORTS: Utah leads the all-time series with Utah State, 35-21 (.675). In their last meeting on Sept. 16, 1999, Utah defeated the Aggies, 3-2 in Salt lake City. The Utes are 14-10 at home, 14-7 away and 7-4 at a neutral site vs. Utah State. New Mexico leads the all-time series with Utah, 25-24. In their last meeting on Nov. 21, 2000, the Utes won in five games. Utah is 11-9 at home, 10-14 away and 3-2 at a neutral site vs. New Mexico. Utah is a perfect 4-0 against Air Force Academy. The Utes are 2-0 at home, 2-0 away and 0-0 at a neutral site vs. the Falcons.
UTES IN THE POLLS: The University of Utah women's volleyball team continues to stay in the Top 25 USA Today/AVCA poll. The Utes moved up to No. 15 in this week's poll. Utah received 694 votes in the Oct. 9 poll.
The Utes earned their first-ever national ranking, coming in 18th in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll released Mon., Sept. 11. Utah, which wasn't ranked in previous polls, received 417 points and boasts an 8-1 overall record entering this week's match-ups with San Diego State and UNLV.
Utah has already defeated three ranked teams this season. The Utes defeated then-No. 1-ranked Stanford in five games on Tues., Sept. 5, and then-No. 24-ranked San Diego on Sat., Sept. 9. Utah lost its first match of the 2000 season to No. 13 ranked Arizona on Sat., Sept. 16. The Utes lost to No. 3 ranked Colorado State in three games, 15-1, 15-8, 15-10 on Sat., Sept. 30 in Fort Collins, Colo. Utah upset in-state rival and then-No. 13-ranked Brigham Young in a three game sweep, 15-5, 15-8, 15-7, on Fri., Oct. 6.
Utah is one of three MWC teams ranked in the polls. Other MWC teams ranked are: Colorado State (3rd) and BYU (17th).
"It is really nice recognition for our program and for our players because they deserve it," said Launiere. "Even though we are ranked now, we still have our focus and each match is an important one for us. We've done very well near the end of the season for the past few years and we want to continue that because that is when it counts."
Utah was one of three Mountain West Conference schools that appeared in the USA Today/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches' Association) Preseason Poll, announced on Mon., Aug. 14. Colorado State and Brigham Young ranked 13th and 15th, while Utah, with 59 points, checked in at No. 30.
QUOTING LAUNIERE: On the upcoming Utah State match: "This has become a very big match-up for us. Utah State is not just an in-state rival to us, they are now a nationally ranked team and the match is very important in terms of our goals on a national level. We know we have our hands full, Utah State plays very well at the Spectrum. We have to go in there prepared and play our best volleyball."

Utah tavels to Colorado Springs, Colo. on Fri., Nov. 10, taking on the Air Force Falcons at 7:00 p.m. (MST). BYU RECAP: The University of Utah women's volleyball team defeated the Brigham Young Cougars for the first time since 1995, in three games, 15-5, 15-8, 15-7 at Crimson Court on Fri., Oct. 6. Brigham Young dropped to 11-5 on the season, 3-2 in Mountain West Conference play.
Senior Lucie Turkova led Utah with 10 kills for an impressive .600 hitting percentage, ten digs and 32 assists. This was Turkova's first triple-double of the season. Junior McKelle Stilson totaled with 10 kills, hit for .529 and six total blocks. Senior Jen Snow Richards added 10 kills for a .318 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Alisa Geddes added eight kills and led the Utes with 11 digs in the match. As a team Utah posted a .276 hitting percentage and nine total team blocks.
For the Cougars, sophomore Sunny Tonga posted nine kills and three blocks. Nina Puikkonen totaled seven kills and led the team with nine digs. Karina Puikkonen had 24 assists in the match. BYU hit for only .034 and added nine total team blocks in the match.
"I think the win over BYU says a lot about our program and where it is at right now," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "BYU has set the standard for volleyball here in Utah because they've got a great program and a great tradition. I'll play matches against ranked teams like this any day. It says a lot that we were able to play as well as we played and hold them down in their hitting percentage as well as a lot of different areas. I am very happy about this win."
Idaho State RECAP: The University of Utah women's volleyball team defeated the Idaho State Bengals in a quick three game match (15-6, 15-10, 15-5) at Crimson Court on Tues., Oct. 3. Idaho State fell to 6-10 on the season, 2-5 in conference play.
Junior Alisa Geddes led Utah with 10 kills and 15 digs, her second double-double of the season. Middle blocker McKelle Stilson totaled nine kills for an impressive .571 hitting percentage and three total blocks. Junior Lenka Urbanova added nine kills and eight digs. Teammate Kim Turner added eight kills, while Lucie Turkova posted 36 assists. As a team Utah posted a .233 hitting percentage and nine total team blocks.
For the Bengals, Joy Deatherage totaled eight kills and three blocks. Melanie Tucker and Amanda Berg each had six kills and six digs. Berg also had five total blocks in the match. Sarah Kozlowski posted 19 assists and led the team with seven digs. Idaho State hit for only .008, but added 10 total team blocks in the match.
"I thought we played really well," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "We've been trying to work on our offense again and Lucie (Turkova) has made some big strides in the past two weeks and is setting very well right now. Alisa Geddes is starting to come back for us and she got into the flow of things and had a nice match. I was very pleased with our play."
UTAH VS. RANKED OPPONENTS: Utah is 3-2 (.600) vs. opponents ranked in the Top 25 USA Today/AVCA Coaches' Poll. On Tues., Sept. 5, the Utes made a five-game comeback win over No. 1 ranked Stanford University in a 2 1/2-hour match at Crimson Court. Utah won 13-15, 12-15, 15-6, 15-10, 15-9. On Sat., Sept. 9, Utah shut-down No. 24 ranked San Diego in five games, (14-16, 15-6, 11-15, 15-12, 15-10). On Sat., Sept. 16, Utah was handed its first loss of the 2000 season by No. 13 ranked Arizona Wildcats. The Utes lost in three games, 15-3, 15-8, 15-10. Utah lost to No. 3 ranked Colorado State in three games, 15-1, 15-8, 15-10 on Sat., Sept. 30 in Fort Collins, Colo. NATIONAL VOLLEYBALL ATTENDANCE: Utah ranks 29th in the nation in home match attendance. In five matches at home, the Utes have brought in 5,460 fans, an average of 780 fans per match. Utah's match with No. 17 ranked Stanford on Oct. 6, ranks in as the 98th highest with a single-match attendance of 1,427. Utah's match with then-No. 1-ranked Stanford on Sept. 5, ranks in as the 132nd highest with a single-match attendance of 1,072.
TURKOVA NAMED VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior setter Lucie Turkov? from Utah was named the Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week after leading the Utes to victories over Idaho State and No. 13 BYU last week. This week's Player of the Week honor is the first for Turkov?.
A native of Brno, Czech Republic, Turkov? became just the second Mountain West Conference player to record a triple-double this season after totaling 32 assists, 10 kills and 10 digs while hitting .600 (10k-1e-15a) in a three-game upset over then-No. 13 BYU (15-5, 15-8, 15-7) Fri., Oct. 6. The Ute win snapped a nine-match drought vs. the Cougars, and marked the first conference victory for Utah over BYU since 1985. Turkov? also racked up 36 assists and hit .222 (3k-1e-9a) in a three-game sweep over Idaho State (15-6, 15-10, 15-5) on Tues., Oct. 3.
An Academic All-MWC selection in 1999, Turkov? set the single match assist record with 81 vs. then-No. 1 Stanford on Sept. 5.

Senior Jen Snow-Richards set a career-high .722 hitting percentage against UMass and a career-high four service aces vs. New Hampshire on Sat., Sept. 2, 2000 On Tues., Sept. 5, 2000, Snow-Richards racked up a career-high and a MWC record for digs in a five-game match (30). Snow-Richards racked-up a career-high 11 assists vs. Nevada-Reno on Fri., Sept. 8, 2000. Snow-Richards recorded a triple-double with 12 kills, 11 assists and 14 digs on Sept. 8 vs. Nevada-Reno. Senior setter Lucie Turkov? recorded her first triple-double (10 kills, 10 digs, 32 assists) of her career on Fri., Oct. 6, vs. BYU. Turkov? posted a career-high 81 assists vs. Stanford on Tues., Sept. 5, 2000. Turkov? has recorded three double-doubles to date this season. On Sat., Sept. 9, 2000, Bradley-Drake broke Snow-Richards MWC record for digs in a five-game match with 31 digs. She also tied a career-high for assists with five. Bradley-Drake recorded double-figures in digs in five out of 11 matches, including one double-double on Sept. 5, vs. Stanford. Lenka Urbanov? recorded a career-high .353 hitting percentage against Eastern Michigan on Fri., Sept. 1, 2000. On Sat., Sept. 9, Urbanov? posted a career-high 17 digs against No. 24 ranked San Diego. Urbanov? had a career-high 17 kills and tied a career-high 17 digs against Cal Poly SLO on Sat., Sept. 9, 2000. She has two double-doubles recorded this season. Against Eastern Michigan on Fri., Sept. 1, 2000, Katrena Ellett totaled a career high 14 digs. On Sat., Sept. 2, 2000, Ellett posted a career-high three service aces against UMass. Against Stanford University on Tues., Sept. 5, 2000, Ellett racked-up a career-high 24 kills and three assists. She recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs on Sept. 2, vs. UMass. In six out of 11 matches, junior Alisa Geddes has recorded double figures in digs and posted one double-double on Sept. 9 vs. then-No. 24-ranked San Diego. Junior McKelle Stilson has posted double-figure kills in eight out of 11 matches.
Utah set a school record for team assists (93) in the match-up with Stanford University on Tues., Sept. 5, 2000, and tied a school record for team kills (97).
MWC STATISTICAL LEADERS: Utah as a team leads the conference in digs, averaging 15.86 DPG. The Utes are currently third in kills (16.14 KPG), in hitting percentage (.234) and in assists (13.81 APG). Utah is fifth in blocks (2.32 BPG) and service aces (1.52 SAPG). Individually, Utah ranks among some of the best in the conference. Senior co-captain, Lucie Turkov? is currently third in the MWC in assists, averaging 11.48 assists per game. Junior Alisa Geddes is sixth in the MWC in digs, averaging 2.83 digs per game. Teammate Adrianne Bradley-Drake is close behind Geddes and ranks seventh in digs, averaging 2.2 digs per game. McKelle Stilson currently ranks seventh in the conference with a .322 hitting percentage and 11th in kills (3.31 KPG). Freshman Kim Turner is eighth in the MWC with a .310 hitting percentage. Senior Jen Snow-Richards is ninth in the MWC in digs, averaging 2.76 dpg, and ninth with a .307 hitting percentage. Senior Brooke Barton is 11th in service aces (0.34 SAPG) and Brenda Beal is 12th in service aces (0.33 SAPG).
HEAD COACH BETH LAUNIERE: In her 11th season, Beth Launiere has not only resurrected the Ute volleyball program and turned it into a consistent winner, she has also guided Utah to unprecedented success on the national level.
Under Launiere's leadership, Utah made its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999, and for a second year advanced to the second round. It is the crowning achievement of Launiere's ten-year tenure at Utah, in which she has posted a 193-140 (.580) career record.
The winningest coach in school history, Launiere has overseen a significant transformation since her arrival in 1990. In the last six years alone, Launiere has guided the Utes to five 20-win seasons and Utah's third-place finish in the MWC in 1999 marked its seventh consecutive upper division finish in conference play.
Launiere worked hard in 1999 to maintain the level of play and expectations of the previous season. With a 22-10 overall record, Utah posted its fourth consecutive, and fifth overall, 20-win season. The Utes' .688 overall winning percentage equaled the third-best in school history. Utah also equaled the third-best conference winning percentage in school history last season (10-4, .714).

LAUNIERE APPROACHING 200 WINS: Utah's winningest coach in school history, Beth Launiere is quickly approaching her 200th career win. Launiere needs just seven more wins and with 12 matches left and the Mountain West Conference Tournament to follow, she could very well hit the mark.

THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: The newest conference in the nation has quickly emerged as one of the best. The Mountain West Conference, which officially commenced operation on July 1, 1999, sent three volleyball teams to NCAA post-season play in its first year. League champion BYU made it to the NCAA Sweet 16, Colorado State made it to the NCAA Regional semifinals and Utah advanced to the NCAA second round.

MWC PRE-SEASON POLL: In a survey of the Mountain West Conference coaches before the season, Utah, which received votes in the preseason national poll, was picked to finish third. Brigham Young and Colorado State each received four first-place votes to headline the 2000 Mountain West Conference Women's Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.
1999 Team and Player Notes: Utah made its second-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and its second-consecutive 2nd-round finish last season. The Utes, seeded No. 9 in the Mountain Region, defeated eighth-seeded Colorado in three games (15-10, 15-6, 17-15) in the first round and lost to top-seeded Hawaii in three games (15-11, 15-6, 15-4) in the second round at the sub regional in Honolulu, Hawaii.
With a 22-10 overall record, Utah posted its fourth consecutive, and fifth overall, 20-win season. The Utes' .688 overall winning percentage equaled the third-best in school history. Utah also equaled the third-best conference winning percentage in school history last season (10-4, .714). Brooke Barton, Jennifer Snow-Richards, Lucie Turkov?, McKelle Stilson, Megan Anderson and Brenda Beal earned academic all-MWC honors last season. Utah and Colorado State garnered the most honorees with six out of a field of 37 student-athletes.
Graciela Torres-Lopez ended her career as Utah's all-time leader in assists with 5,130. She broke the 5,000 mark on Wed., Nov. 24 in the opening match of the inaugural Mountain West Conference Tournament against San Diego State. She broke the record for the number of assists in a season with 1,424.
Utah had four players selected as members of the inaugural All-Mountain West Conference Volleyball Teams. Sophomore McKelle Stilson was a first-team (MB) selection. Senior setter Graciela Torres-Lopez and sophomore outside hitter Alisa Geddes were second-team picks, while junior Brook Barton was named the second-team defensive specialist of the year.
Middle blocker McKelle Stilson ranked in at number five on Utah's individual season record list with a .296 hitting efficiency. She currently ranks sixth with 130 block assists, seventh with 149 total blocks and ninth with 431 kills.
Outside hitter Alisa Geddes ranked in at number five on Utah's individual season record for digs with 375.
