SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team (8-6-1, 1-2 MWC) picked up its first win in the Mountain West Conference, throttling Nevada-Las Vegas (9-5, 2-1 MWC) 4-0 at Ute Field.
Utah went on a three-goal scoring binge within a three-and-a-half minute span to deflate UNLV. Sophomore Katie Tate started the barrage with a header off a left to right cross from junior Alli Cerruti 14:06 into the contest. Freshman Amber Brower struck 1:10 later when she put back consecutive shot attempts by sophomore Jen Williams and Tate. Tate recorded her second goal of the game in the 17th minute when she was fed a pass by junior Amy Kofoed and sophomore Shauna Gurr, to cap the scoring outburst. The Rebels could never recover from the quick hit of multiple goals. Brower tacked on another goal in the 59th minute, with the game already out of reach with Utah's ball control throughout the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Hills combined on the shutout with freshman Lynnsey Asay . Hills denied six UNLV attempts, while Asay made a good jumping save in the middle of the second half. The Utes dominated the pace of the game, keeping the ball in UNLV territory for a majority of the contest.
"Today the team came out fired up," said Head Coach Amy Winslow. "We connected on our passes better, won the 50/50 balls, had more crosses than all season, and used all areas of the field."
"It was important for us to come out and get a win. It was huge for our confidence," Winslow said. "We struck quickly. It was important to score a goal and then come back and get another one. That gave us momentum."
Utah concludes its home schedule Sat., Oct. 14 against San Diego State at 1 p.m. at Ute Field.
