SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Dan Beus scored 20 points and Fred House had four of his 17 points and added two steals in the final minute as Southern Utah beat Utah 77-70 on Friday night.
House made one of two free throws to put the Thunderbirds ahead 72-70 with 47 seconds to play and then stole the ball from Nick Jacobson, who fouled out trying to get it back.
House then converted 3-of-4 free throws before sealing the win for the Thunderbirds (8-3) on another steal with 11 seconds remaining.
Beus made 6-of-9 field goals and all seven of his foul shots while collecting eight rebounds. He also helped shut down Utah's inside game to give Southern Utah its first-ever win over the Utes (6-5).
The Thunderbirds, of the Mid-Continent Conference, have won four of their last five games.
Jeff Monaco had 15 points for Southern Utah, which shot 61 percent in the second half and made 8-of-12 from 3-point range.
Kevin Bradley, who led the Utes with 18 points, hit a 3-pointer to beat the shot clock with 2:50 remaining for Utah's last lead.
It was another stunning home loss for Utah, which saw its national-best 54-game homecourt winning streak end earlier this month in a loss to instate rival Weber State.
Despite a distinct height advantage, Utah could not solve the Thunderbirds' matchup zone. Instead of going inside, the Utes took 21 of their 43 shots came from beyond the arc.
Southern Utah trailed most of the night before Monaco and Beus made back-to-back 3-pointers for a 60-59 lead with 7:20 to play.
As Utah big men Nate Althoff and Chris Burgess missed the front ends of one-and-one situations, Monaco hit two foul shots and Justin Sant buried a 3-pointer to give Southern Utah a 65-63 lead.
Utah coach Rick Majerus, away from the team since last month while rehabilitating his surgically repaired knee, visited with Utes on Friday afternoon.
Majerus plans to return when the Utes play visiting Long Beach State on Jan. 3.
