Salt Lake City - Former University of Utah women's soccer player Staci Burt became the first ever Utah native to be selected to a professional soccer league, after being drafted in the inaugural Women's United Soccer Association, Dec. 10-11.
Born in Salt Lake City, Burt was drafted in the 8th round (the 59th pick overall) by the Carolina Tempest as a midfielder. She earned exposure playing two summers for the Chicago Cobras in the W-League, the top organized women's league in the country, which won the 2000 National Championship. The eight-team WUSA held a week long combine beginning Dec. 4 in Boca Raton, Fla., in which Burt increased her draft status.
Burt exited the Utah program with her name etched atop the record books as the all-time points, goals, and assists leader. From 1996-99, she tallied 97 points on 38 goals and 21 assists. She started in 76 of 78 games during her collegiate career. She was named first team all-conference 1997-99 and second team all-Western Athletic Conference as a freshman in 1996. Burt was a first team all-conference tournament selection in `97 and `99. In 1999 she was named to the NSCAA West Region second team and in `98 she was honored as a member of the SoccerBuzz's west region third team.
She was a three year letterman at Cottonwood High School, and her club team, Devastation, won three state championships. She was MVP of the 1994 State Cup and was a member of the state all-star (South) team in 1996. Burt competed in the Olympic Development Program from 1994-95.
The league begins in April and runs through August. Burt reports to Carolina for a mandatory camp beginning March 1.
"I went to Chicago in order to continue playing competitively," said Burt. "I was excited to hear about the new professional leagues out there for women because there wasn't any serious soccer leagues out there for women after college."
Utah's Graduate Assistant Coach, Erin Fahey, was selected in the 8th round (the 58th pick overall) as a goalkeeper for the Washington (DC) Freedom. She is a 1996 graduate of the University of Portland.
