SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team is 16-22 after splitting a non-conference double header with Southern Utah. The Utes lost the first game 2-1 scoring one run on three hits, while giving up two runs on four hits to SUU. Utah came back to dominate the Southern Utah in the second game, trouncing the Thunderbirds 15-10. Utah scored 15 runs on 14 hits with one error, leaving Southern Utah with 10 runs on eight hits with three errors.
In the first game, the Utes and the Thunderbirds struggled at the plate. Utah managed three singles by Donnie Saba, Mike Goff and Jed Chrisman. Southern Utah faired poorly as well, hitting only three singles and a double by James Anderson.
Benson Barrera started on the mound for the Utes pitching 6.2 innings. He faced 26 batters, giving up three hits and striking out three. Junior Matt McAfee earned the loss for the Utes pitching the final third on the contest.
The second game was dominated by Utah first baseman Nate Weese who went 4-for-4 hitting a double and three home runs, including a grand slam. Weese scored three runs and 10 RBI in seven innings of play. The feat boosts his batting average to .309. He leads the team with nine home runs and 37 RBI.
Freshman Brett Sundberg earned the win for Utah pitching 3.2 innings in relief. He faced 18 batters, allowed five hits and struck out four.
The Utes continue Mountain West Conference play in a three-game series April 13-15 when they host San Diego State. All games begin at 12:00 p.m. at Franklin Covey Field.
