COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Utah baseball team (14-20, 5-8 MWC) got six runs in the late innings on some timely hitting to take game one of a three-game series from Air Force (16-17, 2-8 MWC), 12-8.
Tied at six through six innings, Utah scored in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead. Nate Weese reached on a fielding miscue by the Falcons' center fielder, advancing to third on the error and scoring on Mike Goff's RBI ground out to shortstop. Utah threatened to extend the lead on consecutive singles by Jed Chrisman and Brit Pannier, but Kiwedin Cornell came on in relief for Air Force and got the next two Ute batters to ground out and pop up to end the threat.
Utah, however, would not relinquish the lead. Both teams traded two runs in the eight inning, but the Utes tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth.
Donald Hawes walked and advanced to third on a Rob Stuart double to right. Donnie Saba was intentionally walked to load the bases and establish a double play situation, but the strategy backfired on the Falcons. Adam Castleton singled to right to score Hawes and Stuart, while Saba tagged up and scored on a Sam Swenson sacrifice fly to give Utah a 12-8 lead.
The extra runs were more than enough for Ute closer Mitch Maio, who walked one batter in the bottom half of the ninth inning, but struck out a Falcon batter and closed out the win.
Saba led a 15 hit offensive barrage going 4-for-5 with a double and four runs. Pannier endured a 3-for-5 performance with a double and three RBI's, while Castleton, Swenson, and Chrisman had multi-hit games with two raps each.
Game two of the series is at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow at Falco Field.
