THIS WEEK: The University of Utah women's soccer team will have one final tune-up in an exhibition against Dixie College Wed., Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. at Ute Field, before traveling into Big Sky territory to open the regular season. Utah heads to Pocatello, Idaho to face Idaho State Fri., Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. The Utes then move on to Missoula, Mont. to take on two-time defending Big Sky Champion Montana Sun., Aug. 27 at 1 p.m.
PREVIEW: Despite Idaho State being selected to finish sixth in the Big Sky, the Bengals have played exceptionally well against nationally ranked opponents in exhibitions. Idaho State hasn't been able to rip the net so far in 2000, but played #27 San Diego State to a 1-0 contest and #24 San Diego to a 2-0 decision.
Montana won its second consecutive conference title last season, and has been predicted to win the Big Sky for the fourth year running. The Grizzlies compiled a 12-6-1 mark en route to the title. Montana returns 13 letterwinners, including eight of whom cracked the starting lineup.
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: The defending Mountain West Conference Co- champions University of Utah women's soccer team opens the 2000 season with great expectations. In an exhibition against in-state rival Utah State, the Utes hope the 3-1 victory was an inclination of more things to come.
Junior Alli Cerruti showed Utah the net early knocking in a pass from sophomore Shauna Gurr. Utah dominated through the remainder of the game as junior Amy Kofoed followed suit, striking twice in the second half. The Ute defense didn't break down until the 82nd minute when Ally Clegg punched in a goal for the Aggies. Utah State was stymied by the Ute defense getting off only eight shots. Goalkeeper Courtney Hills turned back seven of the attempts.
TAKE NOTE: Utah was predicted to place second in the MWC pre-season coaches' poll. The Utes received 31 votes, including a first place tally to trail Brigham Young's 35 votes. San Diego State (one first place vote), Air Force, New Mexico, Nevada-Las Vegas, and Wyoming trail Utah respectively.
COMING UP: Utah hosts Washington State in its home-opener Sat., Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. at Ute Field.
