POCATELLO, IDAHO - Utah's women's soccer team (0-0-1) entered a hostile environment for its season opener at Idaho State (0-0-1), where the Bengals have lost only three times at Davis Field. But the Utes didn't expect a battle that would render a 3-3 double-overtime tie, and a combined two yellow cards, a red card and multiple hard fouls.
The defending Mountain West Conference champion Utes fell behind seven minutes into the contest, 1-0. Utah struck back two minutes later, when sophomore Katie Tate blistered a penalty kick into the goal. Sophomore Megan Maxwell put Utah up in the 29th minute, when she scored a goal assisted by Tate. The 2-1 lead was short lived, as ISU answered to knot the game at 2-2 at halftime. The Utes got help from its counterpart in the second half, as an ISU player deflected the ball into her own net. With eight minutes remaining in regulation, the Bengals scored on a penalty kick to force the first extra period.
Idaho State threatened with three corner kicks in the first OT, but Utah goalie Courtney Hills warded off the attempts. Utah came out firing in the second OT, but Bengal reserve goalie Holly Emery denied the late barrage.
Utah out shot ISU 22-17 and recorded five more shots on goal, but couldn't take advantage of the attempts.
The Utes stay in the Big Sky Conference traveling to Missoula, Mont. to take on Montana Sun., Aug. 27 at 1 p.m.
