SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team (4-3-1) upset the west region's 10th ranked team, San Diego (6-2), 2-1 at Ute Field for its third consecutive win. The Torreros set a physical pace early in the contest out-shooting Utah 6-2 in the first 25 minutes, but Utah swung the momentum late in the opening half. Utah got off two more shots to zero for San Diego to close out the first half in a 0-0 deadlock. Sophomore Shauna Gurr broke the tie in the 54th minute when she hit a rocket into the net. Junior Amy Kofoed beat the Torrero goalie in the 70th minute, which would prove to be the decisive goal after San Diego closed the gap to 2-1 in the 77th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Hills turned away six shots. She has surrendered only one goal in the last three games. Utah travels to South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks Fri., Sept.22 at 5 p.m. "We needed a win like that," said Coach Amy Winslow. "The team dug deep. At moments we didn't play great, but picked up the intensity in the second half. We are getting better every game."
