SALT LAKE CITY -- THIS WEEK: The Utes travel to Columbia, SC Fri., Sept. 22 to play South Carolina at 5 p.m. They then travel to Athens, Ga. Sun., Sept. 24 to clash with Georgia at 11 a.m. Utah is on a three-game win streak.
PREVIEW: The Gamecocks are 1-6 after picking up its first win Sunday against Iowa State, 2-1. The two goals against the Cyclones were the most in a single game this season.
The Bulldogs (5-2-1) were previously ranked No. 25 by the SoccerBuzz, but suffered a tie and a loss last weekend. Georgia lost to ISU and played to a draw against Georgia Southern. Senior goalkeeper Nicole Williams broke the SEC career shutout record in the tie with 25.5.
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: The University of Utah women's soccer team (4-3-1) upset the west region's 10th ranked team, San Diego (6-2), 2-1 at Ute Field for its third consecutive win.
The Torreros set a physical pace early in the contest out-shooting Utah 6-2 in the first 25 minutes, but Utah swung the momentum late in the opening half. Utah got off two more shots to zero for San Diego to close out the first half in a 0-0 deadlock. Sophomore Shauna Gurr broke the tie in the 54th minute when she hit a rocket into the net. Junior Amy Kofoed beat the Torrero goalie in the 70th minute, which would prove to be the decisive goal after San Diego closed the gap to 2-1 in the 77th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Hills turned away six shots. She has surrendered only one goal in the last three games.
Utah also posted an impressive 6-0 win over Nevada two days earlier. The goals were scored by six different players, including career firsts by freshmen Heather Wilhelm and Lisa Vasconcellos.
TAKE NOTE: Sophomore Maren Harper tied a Utah single-game record in assists against the Wolfpack with three. Junior Amy Kofoed and sophomore Katie Tate are tied with the team lead in goals with five each.
COMING UP: Utah has a two-game home stand against Boise State Thurs., Sept. 28 at 5 p.m. and Southern California Sat., Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. These are the last non-conference games for the Utes.
