THIS WEEK: Utah's women's soccer team (1-2-1) goes to Tempe and Tucson, Ariz. to clash with the Pac-10's Arizona State Fri., Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. and Arizona Sun., Sept. 10 at noon.
PREVIEW: Arizona State is currently 3-0 and cracked the SoccerBuzz rankings at No. 20 after blanking formerly No. 21 Michigan 4-0. The Sun Devils boast wins over Colorado, 3-1, and Northern Arizona, 3-0. All-American Stacy Tullock leads ASU's offensive barrage, while freshman Patrice Feulner scored three goals in the last two games.
Arizona lost its first two games of 2000 to Southeastern Conference opponents. The Wildcats dropped games to Tennessee, 5-1, and Vanderbilt, 4-0. Twila Kaufman scored Arizona's lone goal thus far.
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: The University of Utah women's soccer team (1-2-1) earned its first win of the season 3-0 over Weber State (0-4) at Ute Field. After going 0-2-1 in the first three games, all of which were overtime, Utah controlled this one from the get-go. Utah out aggressed the Wildcats, attempting more than double Weber's shots 25-12. Junior Amy Kofoed garnered two goals in the game. The first put Utah out front in the 26th minute, when she scored on a shot rebounded from an attempt by sophomore Katie Tate. Her second came in the 63rd minute, when sophomore Megan Maxwell fed her 15-yards inside midfield. Kofoed blasted the half field shot into the upper left of the goal. Tate posted her fourth goal of the year in the 27th minute on an assist by sophomore Shauna Gurr. Goalkeeper Courtney Hills earned her first shutout of the year, rejecting 10 of 11 Wildcat shots.
TAKE NOTE: Last season's scoring leader, junior Amy Kofoed, blasted three goals this weekend. She has now totaled seven points on the year after the scoring outburst. Sophomore Katie Tate continues to lead the Utes in scoring with ten (four goals and two assists).
COMING UP: Utah awaits a two-game homestand Sept. 15 and 17 against Nevada-Reno at 5 p.m. and San Diego at 1 p.m. respectively. San Diego is ranked No. 10 in the west region by SoccerBuzz.
