TEMPE, ARIZ.- - The University of Utah women's soccer team (1-3-1) lost a 2-1 battle to No. 20 Arizona State (4-0).
Early in the 2000 season Utah has suffered some growing pains with no seniors, but Friday's performance against the nationally ranked Sun Devils was encouraging. After playing to a 0-0 halftime deadlock Utah took a 1-0 lead when junior Amy Kofoed hit pay dirt in the 51st minute on a ball fed from freshman Amber Brower. The goal was Kofoed's fourth of the season. Arizona State needed a solid performance by their All-American and two-time Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year Stacey Tullock to overcome the deficit. Tullock scored to tie the game at 1-1 in the 57th minute, then played a good ball to Karine Inoue who scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute. Courtney Hills had six saves in the net for Utah, while the team helped out with two saves.
"We were told this was ASU's toughest game so far this year," said Coach Amy Winslow. "They beat top-25 Michigan 4-0 and a good Colorado team 3-1, so it was very encouraging. It was a good game up and down the field. I was pleased with the first half. We played great defense our youth just showed in pressure situations."
Utah concludes its road trip in Tucson, Ariz. against the University of Arizona Sunday at 1 p.m.
"Hopefully we can go into Arizona with the level we came out of this game with," Winslow said.
