THIS WEEK: The University of Utah women's soccer team (5-2-0) will host one last home match before taking to the road to play one of the top-ranked teams in the nation. On Friday, the Utes will host instate rival Weber State University. The Wildcats are 3-6-1 this season. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
The true test for the Utes will come on Sunday, as they travel to the University of Portland to face the third-ranked Pilots. Portland is 7-1-0 on the year and are vying for the top ranking in the nation. The game will begin at 2:15 p.m. (PDT).
PREVIEW: Weber State sophomore Natalie Hensley leads the Wildcats this season with 18 points and six goals. Hensley was named Big Sky Conference player of the week for two consecutive weeks. The Wildcats are currently on a three-game skid, losing to BYU, Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara.
Portland's arsenal is led by Christine Sinclair, who leads the team in goals and assists this season. The Pilots have three top-tier goalkeepers in Darci Carruthers, Lauren Arase and Cristin Shea. After losing their season opener to UCLA, Portland has reeled off seven consecutive wins against some of the nation's top teams.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: Utah improved their home record to 3-0 with wins over Boston University and Arizona last week. In the match against Boston on Sept. 27, Ute sophomore Missy Dennis scored two goals off the bench. Amy Kofoed and Julie Herdic each added goals to give Utah a 4-1 win. Courtney Hills earned the win at goalkeeper to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Katie Tate began Utah's attack on Arizona on Sept. 30 by scoring her fourth goal of the season less than ten minutes into the match. Utah would proceed to score three first-period goals to take a 3-0 advantage to the break. The Wildcats battled back at the beginning of the second half, but Kofoed's 37th career goal sealed the 4-1 victory for the Utes. Goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay earned her third victory of the season.
UTE NOTES: Kofoed's two goals this week improves her career total to 37, just one shy of the school record held by Staci Burt (Carolina Courage).
Missy Dennis, who leads the team in goals (5) and points (10), has scored three goals in the last two games. With only eight shots this season, Dennis has a .625 shot percentage.
Utah has not lost to a non-ranked team this season. The Utes have fell to Florida and Kentucky, who were both ranked in the top-25 in each of the soccer polls.
