SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah women's soccer team dropped its conference opener on Thursday in a tough-fought match which ended in overtime. The Utes squared off against San Diego State on the road to begin conference play.
The first period of the match was a defensive battle. At the break, the score was tied 0-0. The game would remain scoreless until the 81:39 mark, when San Diego State's Arinda Alvarez would put the Aztecs on the board off of a corner kick.
Utah would quickly retaliate as junior Katie Tate scored a goal less than two minutes later. Tate's fourth goal of the season came from an assist from Shauna Gurr-Bingham. It was Gurr-Bingham's fourth assist of the season. The remainder of the match would remain scoreless, sending the game to overtime.
San Diego attacked quickly, as a shot by Kim Castellanos hit the crossbar. Utah had their opportunity to win with an Amber Brower shot, which was deflected onto the crossbar by a defender. 14:34 had passed in overtime when the Utes committed a foul in front of the goal, giving the Aztecs a free kick. Aztec Danielle Small kicked the ball past Utah goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay to give San Diego the victory. The loss was Asay's first of the season. She is 4-1-0 on the year.
The loss drops Utah to 6-4-0 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain West Conference. San Diego ended their five-match losing streak to up their record to 5-7-0 and 1-0 in conference play. The Utes will continue MWC action on the road against UNLV on Saturday.
