Salt Lake City - The No. 18th ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team defeated the UNLV Rebels in three games, 30-27, 30-20, 30-23, on Fri., Oct. 12, at Crimson Court. Utah improves to 10-4 overall, 4-2 in the MWC. UNLV falls to 5-8 on the season, 2-4 in MWC play.
Junior Sylva Strzinkova led the Utes with 12 kills for a .400 hitting percentage and six digs. Teammate Alisa Geddes racked up 11 kills for a .429 hitting percentage and eight digs. Kim Turner added nine kills for a .235 hitting percentage. McKelle Stilson totaled nine kills for a .667 hitting percentage and Adrianne Drake had seven kills. Jackie Morrill posted 27 assists and freshman Kelsie Kartchner notched 21 assists in the match. As a team Utah posted a .352 hitting percentage and 6.0 total team blocks.
For the Rebels, Patricia Assuncao totaled 10 kills, five digs and three total blocks. Niki King posted 32 assists, respectively. UNLV hit for .268, adding 10.5 total team blocks.
"They are a good defensive team and they are good at the net," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "They didn't get to the net as often as they wanted and that hindered their offense. We mixed the offense up and we needed to do that in order to work both sides of the court. Our comfort level at home helps our offense and I am pleased with our play tonight. "
UP NEXT: The Utes are back in action at home, facing the San Diego State Aztecs on Sat., Oct. 13, at 7:00 p.m. On Tues., Oct. 16, Utah will host the Weber State Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. The Utes will take on in-state rival BYU on Fri., Oct. 19 at Crimson Court at 7:00 p.m. On Tues., Oct. 23 Utah faces the Utah State Aggies at home at 7:00 p.m. The Utes are back on the road on Fri., Oct. 26 vs. New Mexico and on Sat., Oct. 27 vs. Air Force. Match times are set for a 7:00 p.m. start. On Fri., Nov. 2, Utah will host the Wyoming Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m. The Utes will match-up with the Colorado State Rams on Sat., Nov. 3, at 7:00 p.m. at Crimson Court.
