THIS WEEK: Currently in second place in the Mountain West Conference standings, the University of Utah soccer team (9-5-0, 3-2-0 MWC) looks to finish the season this week against Utah State (6-9-1) and conference-leading BYU (10-6-1, 4-1-0 MWC). On Thursday, the Utes will face off against the Aggies at 3:00 p.m. A share of the MWC title will be on the line when the Utes face the Cougars on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
PREVIEW:The Utah State squad is led by Amber Tracy, who has seven goals and an assist to her credit this season. She has helped lead the Aggies to victory over the likes of: Nevada, Idaho State, Northern Arizona, UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton and Pacific. The Aggies enter the game coming off a 2-0 loss to Cal State Northridge.
BYU holds a one-game lead over Utah in the conference standings. The Cougars have been ranked in various polls throughout the season. Herrmann Trophy candidate, Aleisha Cramer leads the Cougars with 22 points on the season. She leads the team with six assists and is tied with freshman Kim Devine with eight goals.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: Utah senior, Amy Kofoed, re-wrote the record books with her top-notch performance against Wyoming. In leading the Utes to an 8-2 victory, Kofoed scored four goals, breaking the school record for individual goals in a game. By adding an assist, she totalled nine points, breaking Jacki Doman's record of seven set in 1996. Freshman Julie Herdic added two goals off the bench, while sophomore Bobbie Benegas had two assists.
In its final home match of the season, Utah remained unbeaten at Ute Field by knocking off Air Force, 2-1. Shauna Gurr-Bingham scored her seventh goal of the season in the victory against the Falcons. Katie Tate's goal marked her third game-winning goal of the year. Lynnsey Asay earned the victory at the goalkeeper position to improve to 7-1 on the year.
UTE NOTES:
Senior Amy Kofoed's record-breaking four-goal performance increased her career total to a school record of 43 goals. Kofoed leads the Utes this season in goals (9), assists (6) and points (24).
Junior Shauna Gurr-Bingham is just five assistsaway from the school record of 21 career assists, held by Staci Burt (Carolina Courage).
Utah's 23 points against Wyoming matched the best single-game output in Ute history. Utah previously tallied 23 points against Illinois State on September 19, 1996.
With its final two matches on the road, Utah remains unbeaten at home this season, finishing with a perfect 7-0 at home.
