SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team improved to 6-2-0 on the season with a 6-0 win against Weber State on Friday. Ute senior, Amy Kofoed, marked her name in school history by scoring her 38th career goal, tying the school record.
The Utes wasted no time in their attack, scoring just after the three-minute mark. Sophomore Bobbie Benegas scored the first goal of the game off of a Kofoed rebound to give Utah the early advantage. Less than two minutes later, Benegas scored again, this time off of an assist from Kofoed. At the 7:33 mark, Kofoed's record-tying goal off of a penalty kick, gave Utah a 3-0 lead. Kofoed's mother, Lynn Kofoed -Weber State's co-head coach- watched from the opposing bench.
In the second period, the Utes continued to control the ball and quickly added to their lead. At the 49:54 mark, Shauna Gurr-Bingham scored her second goal of the year from a Maren Harper assist. Less than two minutes were played before Gurr-Bingham scored again from a Kofoed assist. At the 62:08 mark, the Utes scored their final goal of the game, as Benegas scored from a Gurr-Bingham assist. The goal was Benegas' fifth of the season and marked her first career hat-trick at the U.
The Utes limited the Wildcats to five shots in the match, while Utah had 20. Lynnsey Asay earned her fourth win of the season at the goalkeeper position and remains undefeated for the Utes. "We played very well today," said coach Amy Winslow. "I'm very pleased with the way the team played. We played creative and not sloppy."
Utah will take to the road to face third-ranked Portland on Sunday at 2:15 (PDT). "This win gives us good confidence going into the game against Portland. They are a very good team and it will be a tough game," said Winslow. "We have been getting better against highly ranked teams each time we play them. We are excited for Sunday's match."
