THIS WEEK: Conference play begins for the University of Utah women's soccer team (6-3-0) this week as the Utes travel to San Diego State on Oct. 11 and UNLV Oct. 13. The Utes head into conference play with the best overall record in the Mountain West Conference.
PREVIEW: San Diego State has a 4-7-0 record on the season. The Aztecs are currently on a five-match skid. Last week, the Aztecs fell to USC and Pepperdine. Kim Castellanos leads SDSU in goals with 7 and is among the league leaders in points this season.
UNLV is currently enjoying a four-match win streak, capped off by last week's wins against Nevada and Northern Arizona. At 6-3-2, the Rebels have the second best overall record in the MWC. Anita Pedford and Cristyn Enea lead the rebels in scoring with 11 points each this season. Rebel goalkeeper, Alice Gleason has held UNLV opponents scoreless in her last 300 minutes at play.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK : Utah's offensive attack and tough defense earned the Utes a 6-0 win against Weber State on Friday. Utah sophomore, Bobbie Benegas, scored Utah's first two goals within the first six minutes of the match. She would pull off the hat trick by scoring Utah's final goal at the 62:08 mark. Amy Kofoed scored her 38th career goal in the match to tie Staci Burt's (Carolina Courage) all-time school record. Kofoed also had two assists in the match. Shauna Gurr-Bingham scored two goals for the Utes and tossed in the assist on Benegas' final goal. Utah goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay earned her fourth win of the season and her third shutout of the year.
On Sunday, the Utes traveled to Portland to take on the third-ranked Pilots. Utah gave up two goals within the first 12 minutes of the game to fall behind early. The game would remain scoreless for the final 78 minutes as the Utes fell, 2-0. Utah was limited to seven shots, and three shots on goal, while Portland had 15 shots and 7 SOG.
UTE NOTES: Amy Kofoed scored the 38th goal of her career against Weber State, tying Staci Burt's all-time school record. Kofoed's mother, who coaches the Weber State squad, watched from the sidelines. Kofoed also had two assists in the match to improve her team high to four this season. She leads Utah in scoring with 12 points.
Bobbie Benegas' hat trick against Weber State was the first of her career with the Utes. Benegas now has five goals this season, and is tied with Missy Dennis for the team lead.
Lynssey Asay's shutout against Weber State was her third of the season. Sharing time with Courtney Hills, Asay has earned a perfect 4-0 record this season.
Utah has not lost to a non-ranked team this season. The Utes have fell to Florida, Kentucky and Portland, who were each ranked in the top-25 in various soccer polls.
