The University of Utah women's soccer team ended its season last week at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Las Vegas, finishing the season with an 11-7-0 overall record
Utah was hoping to receive a bid to the NCAA College Cup Soccer Championships, but was left out of the field of 64 teams.
"It is a disappointment, but we just have to look forward to next year," Coach Amy Winslow said. "We had a good strength of schedule and we did well overall. Unfortunately our season is over. Now we have to focus on next season."
Last week, Utah came away with a 3-0 victory over San Diego State to advance to the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. The Utes faced off with No. 1 seeded BYU. The Cougars scored two goals in the first half and held the Utes scoreless to take a 2-0 win and advance to the championship game. The Cougars became the tournament champions by defeating UNLV in the final.
The Utes were undefeated at home this season, earning a 7-0 record at Ute Field. Utah reeled off impressive wins against Miami (Ohio), Arizona, Arizona State and South Florida, and played a strong schedule with road games against Florida, Kentucky and Portland.
Senior Amy Kofoed scored two goals against SDSU to improve her season total to 12 and her record-holding career total to 46. Kofoed also holds the school record with 108 career points. Her 16 career assists rank second all-time at Utah. She was honored as a first team all-Mountain West Conference selection for the third consecutive year.
First team all-conference selection Shauna Gurr-Bingham finished the season with eight goals and four assists. She was second on the team in goals and points. With her senior year ahead of her, she is just five assists shy of the all-time school record of 21 held by Staci Burt.
Sophomores Amber Brower and Bobbie Benegas were named second team all-conference for their play this season. Benegas scored a hat-trick against Weber State.
The Utes have high hopes for next season. With a young team, Utah only loses three seniors: Kofoed, Alli Cerrutti, and two-time all-MWC honoree Lesa Zollinger. This year's squad was comprised of nine juniors, 10 sophomores and four freshmen.
"Next season is big for us," says Winslow. "We had a young team this year. Next year we will be more experienced and more mature as a team. We are looking forward to next season."
