The No. 13 ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team defeated Fairfield in a five-game (24-30, 30-19, 27-30, 30-23, 15-7), come from behind win to clinch third place an the Banker's Classic, on Sat., Nov. 24 in Stockton, Calif. Utah improves to 23-6 overall, 11-3 in the MWC. Fairfield drops to 19-12 overall.
Utah saw three players record double-doubles in the match. Junior Sylva Strzinkova racked up 15 kills for a .244 hitting percentage and 12 digs, while teammate Kim Turner totaled 12 kills for a .391 hitting percentage and 10 blocks. Senior Alisa Geddes notched 11 kills and 12 digs, while McKelle Stilson added 12 kills. Jackie Morrill posted 23 assists and freshman Tracy Neumeier had 25 assists in the match. As a team, Utah hit for .180 and out blocked Fairfield 21.0 to 8.0.
Fairfield's Joanne Saunders recorded 12 kills and 16 digs in the match. Conny Paul totaled 17 kills for a .200 hitting percentage, nine digs and six blocks, while teammate Carola Stoe added 12 kills and nine digs. Megan Mahassy posted 43 assists, respectively. Fairfield managed just a .053 hitting percentage in the match.
"I was really proud of the way our players came back and pulled out the win," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "Our blocking game did it for us once again. We had one total team block at the end of game four and 20 in game five alone. That was what made the difference tonight. It was a total team effort and I am very happy with the win."
UP NEXT: Utah will await the chance to participate in the NCAAs on Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
